Michael Carrick’s Manchester United edged a 3-2 victory against Fullham in their Premeir League clash at Old Trafford on the weekend. Whilst Fullham were able to overcome a 2-0 deficit pulling the game back to 2-2 thanks to a Raúl Jiménez penalty and a world class finish from substitute Kevin, the Cottagers were nevertheless sent home empty handed after Benjamin Sesko smashed a Bruno Fernandes pass into the back of the net in stoppage time making it 3-2, securing all three points for his side and ensuring that they stay in fourth position in the Premier League.
Fernandes provided two on Sunday, not just the winner but also the opener, as a thumping header from Casemiro met the United captains free kick opening the score in the 19th minute. Fernandes registered his 12th assist in the Premier League this season. The record for most assits in a season is 20, originally set by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in the 2003-04 season and later matched by Kevin de Bruyne. With 14 games to go in this campaign United’s captain might well surpass this.
Both players showcased their importance to United on Sunday as Casemiro turned provider for Matheus Cuncha who doubled the Red Devils’ lead early in the second half.
Last month it was confirmed that Casemiro will leave Manchester United at the end of the season. Despite the fact that the Brazilian has an option for an extension in his contract his high wages are why United are extremely hesitant on activating this clause. Thus, the club will be looking to replace the 5 time Uefa Champions Leage winner in the summer. They might have a hard time doing so. A replacement would have to to pair well with Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo who is in talks to extend his contract with the club.
Whilst Casemiro’s exit has already been confirmed, Fernandes’ future remains uncertain. The Manchester United captains contract runs out in 2027 but at 31 years old the question remains if United would be willing to extend his contract or cash in whilst the Portugese midfielders stock is high.
Last summer United had received lucrative offers for Fernandes from Saudi. The possibility of him leaving had even been discussed with him, since the club could have used the money. The question now remains if this summer will be different.
Sundays victory is Carrick’s third in a row after returning to the Old Trafford dug-out. Prior to the match it was questioned if Fulham would be the truest test for him, and I do believe that to be the case. Upcoming fixtures against Tottenham and then West Ham will prove if Carrick can truly be considered a candidate to take on the role of Manchester United head coach after the season ends.
