Real Madrid – Sevilla Liga F

Real Madrid return back to action as they take on sixth place Sevilla this afternoon in their efforts to chase down league leaders Barcelona. Pau Quesada’s side finds themselves in second place 7 points behind their Catalan rivals. The match will kick off at 17:00 at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano. This match is shaping up to be a great one, with both teams in scintillating form having won 4 games from their previous 5 in the Spanish topflight.

This is the first match in the new year for Real Madrid, they finished 2025 on a high as they conquered Espanyol 4-0 away in Barcelona with both Iris Ashley and Linda Caicedo bagging a brace. Both players hadn’t found the back of the net yet as of this season but will be looking to extend their goalscoring form this Saturday.

And in de middle of the first half, with 23 minutes on the clock, this prophecy was fulfilled. As Caroline Weir turned graciously through the Sevilla defenders she snuck a pass through, breaking the last line for Caicedo to run on to who struck the ball ever so sweetly across the goalkeeper into the righthand- top corner. As if she stamped the 1-0 onto the scoreboard herself. An educated finish if I’ve ever seen one.

Not 10 minute later fate struck again. And as regulars at the Real Madrid Femenino game will know, fate wears the number 10, plays in midfield and is from Scotland. Weir is Madrid’ top scorer so far this campaign having scored 7 so far in all competitions. Almost leveling her output from last season where she scored 10. in this instance Madrid’s number 7 Athenea sent Weir through almost serving it on a plate and the Scot finished determined to leave no crumbs.

Madrid seemed in control for the remainder of the game. The second half was less of a spectacle. It looked to be going in favour of the hosts they even won a penalty in the 81st minute with Swedish midfielder Filippa Angeldal stepping up to take it. But against all odds Sevilla shot stopper Esther Sullastres was able to reach the bottom-left corner where Angeldal had placed a seemingly perfect penalty.

“What does it matter, losing with 6-0 or 2-0. I’d rather risk it all to win the game.”

And risk it all they did. With less than 10 minute left of regulation time Sevilla seemed to put it all on the line. Plays were driven by a new surge of urgency. Showcasing a true never say die spirit. But having played 95′ minutes the referee blew his whistle. The match ended 2-0 for Real Madrid.
